MWANZA: THE Minister for Minerals,Mr Antony Mavunde, has said the government will continue to issue licenses to groups that meet the conditions, as part of a strategy to enable small-scale miners to fully participate in the development of the mining sector.

Minister Mavunde said this today, July 18, 2026, during the issuance of mining licenses to 30 groups of youth and women from Kwimba and Misungwi Districts where the event was held at Mhande ward in Mwanza.

He also said the government will cancel the licenses of some mining areas that were held without development and return them to small-scale miners, while urging the people of Mhande Ward, Kwimba District in Mwanza Region, to use the opportunity to increase mineral production.

Mr Mavunde said the government has reviewed all mining areas and canceled the licenses of areas that were not developed.

“The Mhande area in Mwanza with an area of 5,441 hectares was held by one person, now it has been returned to small-scale miners.” He said.

He urged citizens to use the opportunity to conduct productive mining. He emphasized safe mining and said the State Mining Corporation (STAMICO) will bring a mining machine to Mhande Ward.

Mwanza Regional Resident Mining Officer, Mr Nyaisara Mgaya said they received 228 applications for licenses received until July 13 this year.

He said 30 groups of women and youth have completed the requirements and have been granted licenses where approximately 300 beneficiaries will benefit in the first phase.

He said the licenses will help increase government revenue and protect the environment.

Kwimba District Commissioner, Mr Ngwilabuzu Ludigija has commended President Samia Suluhu Hassan for continuing to enable small-scale miners to obtain licenses.

He has urged miners to comply with the law and protect the environment during mining activities.
