Somalia’s FM says political talks are progressing, sees breakthrough ahead

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s Foreign Minister Abdisalan Abdi Ali Dhay said Wednesday that the country’s internationally mediated political negotiations are gaining momentum despite a difficult political standoff, expressing optimism that a significant breakthrough could soon emerge to resolve the ongoing crisis.

Dhay described Somalia’s current political environment as challenging, saying the country remains caught in a political deadlock between rival sides. At the same time, he said the disagreements demonstrate political maturity, with competing parties continuing to pursue dialogue rather than abandoning negotiations.

Speaking about the ongoing talks between the Federal Government and the opposition, which are being mediated by the international community, the foreign minister said the negotiations are steadily moving forward and making tangible progress.

He expressed hope that the dialogue will soon deliver a major breakthrough capable of ending Somalia’s current political crisis and opening the way for a political settlement.

The remarks come as negotiators continue efforts to bridge differences over the country’s electoral framework.

Although both the Federal Government and the opposition have proposed electoral models based on universal suffrage, they remain divided over how the system should be implemented and which institutions or authorities should be responsible for carrying it out.

Those unresolved differences continue to stand in the way of a final agreement, leaving the outcome of the negotiations dependent on whether both sides can reach consensus on the remaining issues.

A successful breakthrough would pave the way for resolving Somalia’s electoral impasse and help steer the country toward a smoother political transition, while failure to bridge the outstanding differences would leave the political uncertainty unresolved.
