Rooted: Kim Driscoll and the Power of Caribbean Heritage

Where we come from matters.

Our Caribbean heritage lives in more than the islands we call home. It travels through generations—in our values, traditions, resilience, ambition and the stories of those who came before us.

Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll is one example of that heritage reaching far beyond Caribbean shores.

Driscoll’s mother was born in Grenada and raised in Trinidad before building a life in the United States. Driscoll was born in Hawaii into a military family and eventually made Massachusetts home, rising from local government to become Mayor of Salem and ultimately Lieutenant Governor.

Through that journey, she has continued to acknowledge her Caribbean roots.

And that matters.

For those of us across the Caribbean and its diaspora, knowing our heritage gives us a deeper understanding of who we are. Our accomplishments may take us around the world, but success does not require us to leave our identity behind.

We can embrace where we are going while remaining proud of where we come from.

Our roots connect us to generations of sacrifice, strength, culture and possibility. They remind us that our individual stories are often part of something much bigger.

Driscoll’s journey—from Grenadian and Trinidadian roots to leadership in Massachusetts—is another reminder of just how far the Caribbean story travels.
