Reason Set for Back to the City Return With A Surprise Guest In Tow. Reason is heading back to the Back to the City stage, and the South African hip-hop veteran has hinted that his 2026 appearance could come with an unexpected guest.

The rapper, real name Sizwe Alakine, confirmed his return after responding to a post from cultural commentator Pediezoel Macxhankhura, who announced that Reason would be part of this year’s Back to the City lineup.
Sharing the post on Thursday through his @ReasonHD account, Reason added to the anticipation with a brief message of his own: “And I gotta a special surprise guest with me.”
Macxhankhura’s original post read, “I don’t know who needs to hear this but @ReasonHD is returning to the @BacktothecitySA stage this year.
if you know you know,” alongside a portrait of the rapper and the festival’s official lineup artwork.
Reason’s appearance comes as Back to the City International Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary. The landmark edition is scheduled for Saturday, 10 October 2026, at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Johannesburg.
This year’s festival also coincides with the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Youth Uprising and the City of Johannesburg’s 140th birthday. The celebrations will take place under the theme “Against All Odds.”
Reason joins a heavyweight local lineup featuring Cassper Nyovest, Emtee, Blxckie, Stogie T, Tuks and Touchline, among others. The international bill includes Ab-Soul, Slum Village and Blu & Exile.
Beyond the performances, the festival will feature heritage moments, power-hour sets spotlighting emerging talent, DJ performances and cultural activations spanning graffiti, skateboarding and basketball.
While Reason’s return is already a notable moment for fans of South African hip-hop, his promise of a “special surprise guest” has added another talking point ahead of the festival. The guest’s identity remains unrevealed, leaving fans to wait for the big reveal on stage.
As Back to the City prepares to mark two decades of hip-hop and urban culture, Reason’s return and his mystery guest could make his set one of the festival’s must-see moments.
