Pact must deliver for Africa – Nandi-Ndaitwah

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has called for stronger implementation of the Pact for the Future, saying its success will ultimately be measured by the impact it delivers across Africa.

Speaking at a high-level side event on the implementation of the Pact for the Future in Africa on the margins of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, Nandi-Ndaitwah said Africa had taken ownership of the pact’s implementation.

She said the pact provides a roadmap for reinvigorating multilateralism and creating a more representative and effective international system, including proper African representation on the United Nations Security Council.

Nandi-Ndaitwah said the pact advances priorities contained in the African Union’s Agenda 2063, including transforming African economies, strengthening peace and security, and promoting science, technology and innovation.

She highlighted financing for development as another key priority, including reforms to the international financial architecture, technology transfer and international tax cooperation.

“Young people should be regarded as partners in shaping the future rather than merely beneficiaries,” she said.

She urged member states to bring implementation of the pact home, saying its real test would be its national uptake and the impact delivered at country level.

With the 2027 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) summit and the post-2030 agenda approaching, Nandi-Ndaitwah said the pact’s implementation should accelerate progress towards the SDGs rather than operate as a parallel process.

She also called for stronger international cooperation, including north-south, south-south and triangular cooperation, to support implementation.
