Opposition Leader questions timing of Cabinet shakeup after Briceño signals 2030 run

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Opposition Leader Tracy Panton is questioning the motives behind Prime Minister John Briceño’s Cabinet reshuffle.

In a statement on Wednesday, Panton asked whether the changes are meant to improve governance and deliver results for Belizeans, or to consolidate political power and support the Prime Minister’s bid for a third term.

She said the timing, coming right after Briceño announced he plans to lead the PUP into 2030, makes the question unavoidable.

Panton also raised concerns about the removal of Julius Espat from Home Affairs, saying he appeared to be providing capable leadership. She asked what prompted the change and what improvements the Prime Minister expects.

“Cabinet appointments must serve national priorities and the public interest not personal ambition or party calculations,” she wrote.

The Opposition Leader said a Cabinet reshuffle is no substitute for accountability, and that the Prime Minister owes Belizeans a clear explanation and a credible plan to improve governance.
