Old Mutual rolls out unit trust campaign to boost investment culture

Old Mutual Investment Group Uganda (OMIG) has launched a new campaign aimed at encouraging Ugandans to take a more deliberate approach to saving and investing through professionally managed unit trusts.

Running under the theme “Your Money Is Serious Business,” the campaign seeks to deepen public understanding of collective investment schemes and promote disciplined, long-term financial planning.

The initiative targets salaried workers, professionals, entrepreneurs and business owners, as well as experienced investors looking for structured and transparent ways to grow their wealth.

Unit Trusts are collective investment schemes where funds from multiple investors are pooled and professionally managed across a diversified portfolio of assets. The structure allows individuals to access professional fund management without directly selecting or managing investments.

Uganda’s collective investment industry has recorded steady growth in recent years. Data from the Capital Markets Authority Uganda shows that the sector had accumulated Shs 1.15 trillion in assets under management and 32,998 investor accounts by November 2024.

OMIG, a licensed fund manager, offers a range of unit trust products, including Money Market, Balanced, Dollar and Umbrella funds. Speaking about the campaign, Zac Kiseesi said the initiative comes at a time when more Ugandans are becoming intentional about how they manage and grow their money.

“Money represents the plans, responsibilities and ambitions that people work hard to achieve. It should therefore be managed with the seriousness, discipline and professional oversight it deserves,” Kiseesi said.

He noted that the campaign aims to demystify investing and position it as an accessible financial habit rather than an exclusive activity for wealthy individuals.

“Investing is not reserved for a small group of financial experts or wealthy individuals. It is a responsible financial behaviour that people can adopt progressively as they work towards their goals.”

OMIG says investors can start with as little as Shs 100,000, with access to accounts provided through the OMIG Wealth App and the Old Mutual online platform. Through these channels, customers can open accounts, make deposits, withdraw funds and track portfolio performance in real time.

Kiseesi said the digital platforms are designed to enhance transparency and convenience while maintaining professional oversight. “Our objective is to give investors’ confidence that their money is being managed responsibly while enabling them to track anmanage their investments conveniently.”
