Ohangwena backs Pohamba centre heritage nomination

The Hifikepunye Pohamba Community Resource Centre at Okanghudi village in the Ondobe constituency has been nominated to become a national heritage site.

The nomination was discussed at a stakeholders’ consultative meeting held at Eenhana on Thursday.

The proposed declaration covers three heritage features at the centre: the historic tree, the statue of former president Hifikepunye Pohamba and the Pohamba Community Resource Centre.

Pohamba family representative Tulongeni Pohamba says former president and founder Pohamba established the centre in the Ohangwena region to encourage tourism in the area.

Tulongeni says the centre gives communities a place to research historical events and access information that can help them plan for the future.

He says it will preserve presidential records from Pohamba’s administration between 2005 and 2015.

Ohangwena governor Kadiva Hamutumwa says the centre represents leadership, community empowerment, education and inclusive development.

The Oukwanyama Traditional Authority also support the nomination.

The Ohangwena region currently has three national heritage sites, namely the Eenhana Memorial Shrine, Omhedi and Ondeshifiilwa.
