Johannesburg – SAFA president Danny Jordaan is keeping a low profile ahead of Saturday’s elective congress, relying on his long-standing support within the football association rather than mounting a high-profile public campaign for re-election.
Jordaan is seeking a fourth term after more than 13 years at the helm of the South African Football Association, with AmaZulu owner Sandile Zungu his only challenger. The two were cleared by SAFA’s Governance Committee to contest the presidency.
According to News24, Jordaan’s approach has been described as a “silent campaign”, with those close to his camp confident that his record and support among SAFA’s regional structures mean he does not need to publicly sell his candidacy.
That confidence has been echoed by SAFA KwaZulu-Natal chairperson Kwenza Ngwenya, who said that the province was bringing its votes behind Jordaan.

“He [Jordaan] has already won… we are just waiting for confirmation on Saturday,” Ngwenya said, according to Sowetan.
The contest has nevertheless become increasingly heated. Zungu has accused the incumbent administration of manipulating the electoral process and destabilising regions supporting his campaign.
SABC Sport reported that Zungu remained confident of victory while alleging attempts to undermine his support base.
Mail & Guardian reported that Zungu had accused SAFA of “financial inducements, systematic regional victimisation and electoral fraud”, allegations that have not been independently proven.
“We are seething with anger in terms of what is being done to the regions,” the report quoted Zungu as saying.

“There was an attempt to change leadership which did not succeed and as punishment, they are being disqualified from participating in the forthcoming elections. As I am talking, there are consultations with legal counsel to see how to take that matter forward and, trust me, we take it very, very seriously.”
With the congress set for 12 September, Jordaan’s strategy now faces its biggest test: whether his established support within SAFA’s voting structures will be enough to secure another four-year term without an aggressive campaign.
