National Institute of Culture and History and Corozal Organization of East Indian Cultural Heritage discuss preservation of East Indian heritage

By Zoila Palma: The National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) met with the Corozal Organization of East Indian Cultural Heritage (COEICH) on July 21, 2026, for a courtesy visit focused on strengthening collaboration to promote and preserve East Indian heritage in Belize.

Since its establishment in 2009, COEICH has worked to safeguard and celebrate East Indian culture through festivals, storytelling, cooking workshops, cultural literature, dance performances, summer camps and other initiatives. The organization has also contributed to the rehabilitation of Masala Park and regularly delivers cultural presentations at schools and national events.

During the meeting, COEICH shared its vision and goals, including its efforts to teach East Indian history and cuisine in schools. The organization is also working on producing a traditional cookbook as part of its efforts to document and promote cultural heritage.

NICH President Albert Vaughan thanked the Corozal Organization of East Indian Cultural Heritage for its continued commitment to preserving Belize’s cultural heritage and expressed the institute’s willingness to collaborate and support its initiatives.
