Minister calls for CALM over fourth SASSA payment date in August

There’s a storm brewing over the fourth SASSA payment date in August. New Minister of Social Development Dina Pule assured beneficiaries this week that social welfare payments will continue as scheduled and the money will keep flowing.

Pule was addressing the Government Communication and Information System on Tuesday 28 July 2026. In her message, Pule outlined her early priorities as new SASSA minister. She is rolling out the department’s strategic plan to strengthen internal systems and fill key posts behind closed doors.

FOURTH SASSA PAYMENT DATE IN AUGUST

However, there is a more urgent message regarding the fourth SASSA payment date in August. This is set aside for South African Social Security Agency beneficiaries flagged for review throughout the month. As such, SASSA also confirmed that reviewed beneficiaries will need to get their house in order by Friday 7 August 2026.

Following a 33-day wait period, SASSA payment dates for next week go like so:

• Older Persons Grant: Tuesday, 4 August 2026
• Disability Grant: Wednesday, 5 August 2026
• Children’s Grants: Thursday, 6 August 2026

WHY SASSA REVIEWS HAPPEN

Pule explained that the fourth SASSA payment date in August exists to confirm beneficiaries still qualify. That is why it is so important you keep your contact details up to date with the agency. Accordingly, the process protects the system from fraud and keeps the database accurate. SASSA review notifications arrive via SMS.

Ignoring a review notice risks suspension or lapsing of your grant entirely. Beneficiaries alerted about the fourth SASSA payment date in August need to bring the following (plus copies) to a SASSA branch immediately:

• A valid South African ID
• Proof of income
• Three months of bank statements
• Proof of residence
• Proof of marital status, where relevant
• Any extra documents named in the notice

Bedridden or medically unable beneficiaries can arrange a friend or loved one to represent you. All you need is a letter from your doctor explaining your condition, and everything certified by a commissioner of oaths/SAPS. To soften the blow, Pule reminds beneficiaries that SASSA offers online services to cut queue times, with free Wi-Fi available at offices for people doing eLife certification and biometrics.

SASSA reports an estimated R1-billion saving over the past year thanks to intensified screening and data verification. This was mandated in collaboration with the National Treasury root out ineligible recipients.
