Man detained after chopping 62-year-old grandmother in Succotz during alleged ‘mental health crisis’

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police have detained a 23-year-old man in connection with a chopping incident that left his 62-year-old grandmother seriously injured in San Jose Succotz Village.

The incident occurred at a residence in the village at about 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 1.

The injured woman was rushed for medical treatment and was listed in a stable condition at the time of the police press briefing. Police officers, assisted by community members, later apprehended the suspect and took him into custody.

Police said their preliminary investigation suggests that the man may have been experiencing a mental-health crisis. The woman was reportedly injured when she attempted to assist him.

Initial community reports described the injured woman as the suspect’s grandmother, although police officially referred to her only as a female relative.

The man remained detained as police continued their investigation. No criminal charges had been announced at the time of the briefing.
