Meghalaya: Eight United Democratic Party MLAs join ally BJP
The Bharatiya Janata Party and the United Democratic Party are part of the state’s ruling coalition.

Eight MLAs of the United Democratic Party in Meghalaya joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday.
This took the BJP’s tally in the 60-member Assembly to 10 from two, making it the second-largest party in the House. The United Democratic Party is left with four legislators. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma-led National People’s Party is the largest party with 33 MLAs.
The United Democratic Party and the National People’s Party are part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance at the national level. The three parties are also part of the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance in the state.
The MLAs who joined the BJP are Lahkmen Rymbui, Pius Marwein, Kyrmen Shylla, Mayralborn Syiem, Matthew Kurbah, Ollan Singh Suin, Balajied Kupar Synrem and Synshar Lyngdoh Thabah.
They were inducted into the Hindutva party in Delhi in the presence of Union minister Kiren Rijiju.
Rijiju said that the eight legislators joining the BJP, from an ally, will “further strengthen” the Sangma government. It will lead to better coordination, “more understanding” and help improve efforts to develop Meghalaya, the BJP leader said.
