King Letsie III at 63

A Monarch of service, unity and hope

AS Basotho celebrate the 63rd birthday of His Majesty King Letsie III, the occasion offers an opportunity not only to honour the nation’s monarch but also to reflect on a reign defined by humility, service, and unwavering dedication to the welfare of the people.

Since ascending the throne in 1996, King Letsie III has remained a symbol of national unity, stability and continuity. Above politics and partisan interests, he has consistently championed causes that directly improve the lives of Basotho, earning admiration both at home and on the international stage.

Among his most significant contributions has been his tireless advocacy for food security, nutrition and sustainable development. At a time when many African nations continue to grapple with hunger, malnutrition and the growing effects of climate change, His Majesty has used his influence to place nutrition at the centre of national and global development discussions.

As the African Union Nutrition Champion, King Letsie III has become one of the continent’s strongest voices in the fight against malnutrition. Through his leadership, he has consistently reminded governments that nutrition is not merely a health issue but the foundation for education, economic productivity and national development.

His advocacy has helped elevate the importance of investing in maternal and child nutrition, sustainable agriculture, school feeding programmes and resilient food systems. Under his stewardship, Lesotho has become an influential voice in continental conversations on ending hunger and ensuring that every child has an opportunity to grow, learn and thrive.

His Majesty has repeatedly emphasised that no nation can achieve meaningful development while its children suffer from stunting and preventable malnutrition. His message has resonated across Africa, inspiring greater political commitment to addressing one of the continent’s most pressing challenges.

Beyond nutrition, King Letsie III has also distinguished himself as a global champion of international cooperationin the management of water resources and infrastructure and environmental sustainability.

His leadership in promoting peaceful and equitable management of shared water resources recently earned him the prestigious Global Water Changemakers Award, presented by the Global Water Partnership during the inaugural African Union–Africa Water Investment Programme Africa Water Investment Summit in Cape Town.

The award recognised His Majesty’s unwavering commitment to advancing transboundary water cooperation as a foundation for peace, regional integration and sustainable development.

The recognition also celebrated Lesotho’s successful partnership with South Africa through the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP), one of Africa’s most successful examples of water diplomacy.

For decades, the LHWP has demonstrated how shared natural resources can strengthen relations between neighbouring countries while delivering tangible economic benefits. The project supplies water to South Africa’s industrial heartland while generating hydroelectric power and revenue that contribute significantly to Lesotho’s economy.

Under His Majesty’s guidance and consistent support, Lesotho has become an international example of how water can unite nations rather than divide them.

His advocacy has further inspired broader regional cooperation, including initiatives that seek to expand water sharing and strengthen climate resilience across Southern Africa.

The Global Water Changemakers Award therefore recognised not only King Letsie III’s personal leadership but also Lesotho’s growing reputation as a responsible custodian of one of the region’s most valuable natural resources.

His Majesty’s influence extends well beyond these flagship initiatives.

Throughout his reign, he has consistently championed education, youth empowerment, healthcare, environmental conservation and the preservation of Basotho culture and heritage. His calm, measured leadership has often provided reassurance during periods of political uncertainty, helping to maintain national cohesion while encouraging dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes.

Internationally, King Letsie III has become one of Lesotho’s most respected ambassadors. Whether advocating for nutrition, climate resilience, water security or sustainable development, he has ensured that the voice of this small mountain kingdom is heard on some of the world’s most influential platforms.

His leadership reflects a deep understanding that modern monarchies derive their strength not from political authority but from moral leadership, public service and the ability to unite people around shared aspirations.

As His Majesty celebrates his 63rd birthday, Basotho have every reason to take pride in a King whose reign has been characterised by dignity, compassion and an unwavering commitment to improving lives.

His example reminds the nation that true leadership is measured not by titles or power, but by service to others, integrity and the pursuit of the common good.

On this special occasion, we join the nation in wishing His Majesty King Letsie III a joyful and blessed 63rd birthday. May he continue to enjoy good health, wisdom and strength as he leads the Kingdom of Lesotho with the same grace and dedication that have defined his reign.

Happy 63rd Birthday, Your Majesty!

May your vision for a healthier, more prosperous and united Lesotho continue to inspire generations of Basotho and strengthen the Kingdom’s standing across Africa and the world.
