Joel Hamilton granted $1,500 bail after allegedly wounding 72-year-old father

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Ladyville resident Joel Hamilton has been granted bail in the sum of $1,500 as he awaits trial on a charge of wounding his 72-year-old father.

Hamilton appeared before a Senior Magistrate in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he was provided with seven pages of disclosure. His trial has been set for October 8, 2026.

Hamilton had been on remand at the Belize Central Prison for more than two months in connection with the alleged June incident. Bail was granted at $1,500 plus one surety of the same amount, which he was able to meet.

The court imposed several conditions on his release. Hamilton is not to contact his father and must report to the Ladyville Police Station every Tuesday and Friday. He must also remain living with his sister in the Spanish Town area of Ladyville and cannot change his residence without first obtaining permission from the court. Additionally, he is not to be arrested and charged with any offence while on bail.

Hamilton is accused of causing a wound to his father during a family dispute.

When he first appeared in court, Hamilton entered a guilty plea with an explanation. However, after the prosecution’s facts were read to him, he appeared uncertain as to whether he agreed with the allegations. The Magistrate subsequently entered an equivocal plea of not guilty on his behalf.

Bail was initially denied after the prosecution raised concerns about the age and safety of the alleged victim, who had been residing in the same household as Hamilton.

Hamilton’s matter is scheduled to return to Court #2 for trial on October 8, 2026.
