Island-wide CCTV network expected to be up and running by November

Anguilla’s island-wide CCTV network is now expected to be operational by November, after the project’s implementation schedule was pushed back by one month.

The revised timeline follows engineering enhancements to the camera pole infrastructure, designed to improve durability, reduce corrosion risks and minimise future maintenance costs.

Infrastructure minister Jose Vanterpool announced the update during a government press conference on 20 July, during which he said about 60% of the required materials are now on island.

He said the new pole design includes improved outreach arms and factory-installed mounting fittings, allowing all fabrication work to be completed before the poles are galvanised.

This approach provides a more resilient long-term national asset, he said.

Safety progress

In March, Vanterpool announced that Digicel had been awarded the government contract to establish and operate Anguilla’s first island-wide CCTV network.

The telecommunications company will be tasked with installing high-tech cameras in 30 locations throughout the island as part of the project to combat illegal activity.

In the recent press conference, the minister explained that there may be multiple cameras per location, and added that private cameras may eventually be “plugged into” the system to expand its reach.

The entire CCTV network will be monitored from the Joint Emergency Services Control Room in The Valley.

While work continues, cameras have been set up in strategic locations in Anguilla to support police during the Anguilla Summer Festival.

“I won’t speak to specific locations, but we do have coverage throughout the island already in anticipation of carnival, of which the CCTV programme will build upon,” Vanterpool said.

Years in the making

An island-wide CCTV network was one of the recommendations that came from the Gun Crime and Violence Committee’s report that was presented in the Anguilla House of Assembly in April 2024.

In a past press conference, Vanterpool said that EC$1 million had been allocated for the system in the government’s 2024 Budget, through the Governor’s Office which oversees internal security.

The procurement documents were sent out in October 2024 with a deadline of 4 December, but were later withdrawn after bidders requested clarifications.

Some of the funds allocated for the system were redirected to complete and open the Joint Emergency Services Control Room.

The process began again in 2025, leading to Digicel being awarded the contract in September 2025, according to a notice on the government’s procurement portal.
