By Zoila Palma: At least three Colombian soldiers were killed and four others wounded following an attack involving explosives dropped from drones and a subsequent clash inside a military compound in northeastern Colombia, the country’s army today.
The attack occurred late Friday at a military unit in Ocaña, Norte de Santander, near the Venezuelan border. Local authorities attributed the assault to the National Liberation Army (ELN).Two soldiers died at the scene, while a third succumbed to injuries after receiving medical attention, AP reports.
President Abelardo de la Espriella condemned the attack and vowed that the government would respond with the full force of the state against those responsible.
The ELN, an armed group that has been active in Colombia since 1964, maintains a significant presence in the Catatumbo region.
The region has experienced ongoing violence as the ELN and dissident factions of the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) compete for control of territory and lucrative coca-producing areas near the Venezuelan border.
