International News: Cuba’s fuel crisis leaves Iconic Vintage cars parked and drivers struggling

By Zoila Palma:  Cuba’s worsening fuel crisis is forcing many of the island’s iconic vintage American cars, known as “almendrones,” off the roads as gasoline shortages continue to affect transportation and daily life, ABC reports.

The classic vehicles, which have long served as shared taxis and symbols of Cuban resilience, have increasingly been left idle amid a shortage that Cuban officials blame on a U.S. energy blockade.

In the town of Las Minas on the outskirts of Havana, 27-year-old auto body shop owner Diriel Valdez is restoring a 1951 Chevrolet Deluxe but says obtaining fuel has become nearly impossible. Valdez is among thousands of Cubans waiting through a government reservation system for gasoline.

The fuel crisis comes as Cuba faces one of its most severe energy shortages in years.

The country produces only about 40 percent of the fuel it consumes and relies heavily on imports.

Since January, the Trump administration has tightened sanctions on Cuba and threatened tariffs on countries that sell or transport oil to the island, complicating efforts to secure fuel supplies.
