In a high-level strategic bilateral meeting held in Mogadishu, representatives from Somalia, Turkey discuss foreign support for terror groups alongside broader initiatives to deepen defense and security cooperation across the Horn of Africa. The bilateral discussions took place between Somalia’s Minister of Defense, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, and Major General Sabahattin Kılınç, Commander of the International Joint Strategic Command of the Turkish Armed Forces General Staff. Senior defense officials addressed critical security dynamics, focusing on joint intelligence sharing, regional stability, and coordinated responses to external interference aimed at destabilizing national security.

According to official statements released by the Ministry of Defense, both delegations examined persistent challenges surrounding counter-terrorism operations, specifically evaluating reports of external actors facilitating support for insurgent networks operating in central and southern regions. Minister Fiqi expressed appreciation for Ankara’s sustained military backing, pointing out that Turkish security assistance has proven essential in strengthening national defense infrastructure and building operational capability within the armed forces. The meeting was also attended by Permanent Secretary Yusuf Ali Mohamed, SNA Assistant Chief of Defense Major General Mohamed Ali Barise, and TURKSOM Military Training School Commander Major General Sabahattin Kalkan.

The security consultations build upon a long-standing strategic defense alliance established over more than a decade of institutional collaboration. Turkey operates its largest overseas military training facility, the TURKSOM base in Mogadishu, which has successfully trained thousands of Somali National Army infantry personnel and specialized Gorgor elite commandos. Furthermore, bilateral defense accords signed between the two nations encompass joint maritime domain awareness, naval development support, and active air defense cooperation to protect vital trade corridors and coastal sovereign territories.

defense analysts observe that addressing foreign interference and illegal arms supply chains remains vital for guaranteeing long-term security in the region. Government representatives emphasized that maintaining coordinated defense initiatives with trusted international partners enhances domestic counter-insurgency capabilities while safeguarding maritime boundaries. As Somalia, Turkey discuss foreign support for terror groups, officials from both nations reaffirmed their shared commitment to elevating operational coordination, reinforcing border security frameworks, and maintaining strategic alignment to eliminate extremist threats.
