Erica Peeples Is Making Room for EveryVersion of Herself

Erica Peeples has never been interested in being just one thing.
Actress. Producer. Writer. Poet. Creative.

For Peeples, each title represents another piece of a career that continues to expand and during my recent conversation with her, it became clear that she isn’t waiting for anyone else to define what that expansion should look like.
Our conversation came at an especially busy moment for the actress. Peeples is currently starring as Briana Roth in ALLBLK’s crime drama D.O.P.E. Unit, while also embracing another side of her artistry through poetry and connecting with fans beyond the screen.

Stepping Into the World of D.O.P.E. Unit
In D.O.P.E. Unit, Peeples takes on the role of Briana Roth, the matriarch at the center of the powerful Roth crime family. The series follows a secret police task force created after the murder of the Philadelphia police chief’s son. Rookie officer Jayda King goes undercover in an attempt to infiltrate the Roth organization, setting off a battle involving family, power, deception
and loyalty.

It’s exactly the kind of layered world that gives Peeples room to explore a woman audiences may not be able to easily categorize as simply “good” or “bad.” During our interview, we talked about stepping into Briana’s world and the evolution Peeples continues to experience as an actress. Her career has placed her alongside an impressive list of performers and creatives, and our conversation touched on working with names including David Banner and Raven-Symoné.

But what stood out to me was that Peeples’ story wasn’t confined to what she’s doing in front of the camera. There is another Erica she wants audiences to meet.

Meet EP, the Poet

When our conversation shifted to poetry, I got to see a different side of Peeples.
EP, the poet. For someone whose career is largely associated with acting, poetry offers another way for Peeples to express herself creatively—without requiring her to disappear into a character first.
That distinction matters.

Actors spend much of their careers interpreting someone else’s words. Poetry gives Peeples an opportunity to center her own.
As we talked about her poetry and creative expression outside of acting, what emerged was a portrait of an artist increasingly comfortable making room for all of herself. Acting doesn’t have to disappear for poetry to exist. Producing doesn’t cancel out performing. One creative identity doesn’t have to compete with another.

And perhaps that is one of the more interesting chapters of Peeples’ career right now: she isn’t asking audiences to choose which version of her they want.
She’s allowing them to meet all of them.

More Than One Lane

There can be an expectation in entertainment that once an artist becomes known for something, they should stay there. Peeples seems much less interested in that idea. Her journey has already taken her from Michigan to Juilliard and into Hollywood, with previous conversations about her career revealing a path that has included self-doubt, financial challenges, mentorship, faith and ultimately learning to trust her own purpose.

Now, that journey continues through characters like Briana Roth, but also through the creative work that allows audiences to encounter Erica Peeples herself. That may ultimately be what I took away most from our conversation.
Peeples isn’t abandoning one chapter to begin another. She’s building on all of them. The actress is still acting. The producer is still creating. And now, EP the poet has something to say, too.

For Peeples, there doesn’t seem to be a need to choose between those identities. There is room for all of them.
