Domestic women’s T20 cricket gets underway

Choiseul and the Saint Lucia National Cricket Association (SLNCA) Development XI kicked off the Women’s T20 Tournament on Saturday, July 4, at the La Fargue Playing Field in Choiseul. This marks the first local women’s tournament since 2021.

Choiseul won the west coast derby against their neighbours Laborie by seven wickets. Laborie scored 101 for 8 in 15 overs, while Choiseul reached 104 for 3 in only 12.2 overs. For Laborie, Skyy Smith made an unbeaten 50 from 43 balls, hitting six fours and a six. Swaylin Williams took three wickets for just eight runs from three overs for Choiseul.

Laborie gave away 34 extras in Choiseul’s run chase. An unbeaten partnership between Roylin Cooper and Alicia Herman carried the hosts over the line. Cooper scored 23 not out off 18 balls with two fours. Herman added 22 off 29 balls with a four.

The Development Team beat South Castries by seven runs. They got to 147-7 in 15 overs, and held the South Castries team to 140-9 in 14.5 overs.

Namiah Marcellin smashed 60 runs off 44 balls for the Development Team, with seven fours and a six. Natalia Phillip supported with 41 runs off 26 balls, inclusive of five fours and a six. Krushner Joseph took 2 for 21 from three overs for South Castries and also took a catch.

West Indies player Nerissa Crafton led South Castries with 35 runs from 16 balls, but the team struggled after she was out. Crafton hit three fours and two sixes.

Marcellin and Phillip both had strong all-round games, taking two wickets each, although the Development Team gave away 46 extras. Marcellin took 2 for 7 from 1.5 overs, and Phillip took 2 for 24 from three overs and also effected a run out.
