Belize City recognized as “Tsunami Ready City”

By Zoila Palma:  Today, Belize City proudly received official recognition as a Tsunami Ready City.

The Belize City Council said that this is an important milestone in our continued work to protect lives, strengthen emergency preparedness, and build a safer, more resilient city.

“This achievement reflects extensive planning, public education, clearly identified evacuation routes and assembly points, improved warning systems, and strong coordination among local, national and international partners,” the council said.

The Belize City Council extended appreciation to the City Emergency Management Organization, the National Emergency Management Organization, the National Meteorological Service, UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, the International Tsunami Information Center, NOAA, the United States Government, uniformed services, technical officers, first responders, community leaders and residents who contributed to this achievement.

“While we celebrate this recognition, we also recognize that preparedness is an ongoing responsibility. We encourage every resident to remain informed, learn the evacuation routes and assembly points within their community, and take all emergency alerts seriously,” the council added.
