By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 58-year-old Belize City mechanic and supervisor has been arraigned on three traffic-related charges stemming from last week’s fatal road traffic accident that claimed the life of 77-year-old Erleen Elizabeth Gillett of Burrell Boom Village.
Gregory Nicholas appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, where he was charged with manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, and driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention.
No plea was taken because the charges are indictable.
There was no objection to bail, and Nicholas was granted bail in the sum of $6,000 with one surety of the same amount. As conditions of his bail, he must surrender his passport, cannot leave the jurisdiction without permission from the court, and must report to the Belama Police Station every two weeks on a Friday.
He is due back in court on October 9, 2026, for disclosure.
The charges arise from a fatal collision at about 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 27, along the Phillip Goldson Highway near Enriquez Martinez & Sons Ltd.
Police allege Nicholas was driving a gold Dodge Caravan toward Belize City when Gillett, who was crossing the highway, stepped from the median divider into the path of the vehicle. She was struck and reportedly hit the windshield before falling onto the pavement.
Gillett was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Nicholas was subsequently detained, his vehicle was impounded, and a blood sample was obtained. Police also served him with a Notice of Intended Prosecution.
A post-mortem examination conducted on September 1 determined Gillett’s cause of death to be multiple blunt force trauma injuries due to a road traffic accident.
