August: I am not interested in saving the UDP, my focus is saving Belize from politicians

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Veteran United Democratic Party figure Alberto August has publicly rebuffed calls to help rescue his party, declaring in a social media post Tuesday that his purpose in Belizean politics has shifted, away from party rescue and toward what he describes as changing how the nation is governed.

“Many persons are asking me to help save the United Democratic Party and to assist in its return to government,” August wrote. “I am not interested in saving any political party. My focus is on saving Belize from politicians.”

In a striking assessment of his own political home, August wrote that “there are many in the United Democratic Party who, if elected to government, will do the same or maybe even worse” than what he says the People’s United Party is doing to Belize.

“My purpose is different. I am focused on changing the way the nation is governed,” he continued. “I want to assist in establishing a system that will rid the nation of persons in governance who see politics as a get rich scheme. A system that will attract true leaders instead of politicians.”

The post lands days after August publicly pressured the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister for answers on the reported incident involving Belize’s ICAO representative in Montreal, pressure that preceded government’s confirmation and its waiver of diplomatic immunity.

Notably, August’s statement leaves the biggest questions open. He announced no new movement or party, did not state he is leaving the UDP, and offered no detail on what the system he envisions would look like or how he intends to build it. With the opposition’s internal struggles a running theme of the current political season, his declaration adds a new variable to an already unsettled landscape.
