Analyst hails the CCM-ACT-Wazalendo reconciliation as a symbol of political maturity

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Executive Director of AFREDA and President of ACERICAANDO and an expert in conflict prevention, conflict resolution, reconciliation and peace building, Dr Dennis Muchunguzi has said that reconciliation is not a sign of weakness but a symbol of political maturity and a foundation for faster national development.

Speaking in a special interview with the Daily News in Dar es Salaam, the analyst said reconciliation creates an environment where people who may have different political views can work together towards shared social and economic goals.

Elaborating, Dr Muchunguzi said the recent reconciliation agreement between Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and ACT-Wazalendo in Zanzibar demonstrates how political differences can be transformed into cooperation for the benefit of citizens.

“The impact of reconciliation is that it creates a situation where people work together harmoniously as brothers and sisters, putting aside divisions and focusing on development,” he said.

According to the Dr, the agreement, witnessed by President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Zanzibar President Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, marks a new chapter in Zanzibar’s political journey stating that the move is significant considering Zanzibar’s history of political tensions following elections, particularly since 2000, which created mistrust and divisions among citizens.

Additionally, he said that the establishment of the Government of National Unity framework through the Zanzibar Constitution in 2010 provided an important foundation for political cooperation.

He noted that the arrangement worked successfully after the 2020 elections, proving that political competitors can cooperate when national interests are prioritised.

“Political parties are not the destination of development. They are vehicles that should help citizens achieve development,” he said.

The analyst praised President Samia for repeatedly emphasising that reconciliation is not weakness, saying successful reconciliation requires compromise and willingness to consider the interests of others.

“When you enter reconciliation, there is give and take. Accepting compromise for the sake of peace and development is not weakness; it is maturity,” he said.

Moreover, he urged Tanzanians to view reconciliation as an opportunity to strengthen unity and accelerate development rather than as a political arrangement benefiting specific groups.
