Africa’s borders are getting a technology overhaul — and a Nigeriancompany is leading the charge.African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat signed a 20-year, $3.1 billion concession agreement with Bergmans Security Consultants and Supplies Limited to modernise customs administration across Africa. The deal was signed in Abuja, with AfCFTA Secretary-General Wamkele Mene representing the trade bloc & Bergmans Chairman Saleh Ahmadu signing on behalf of the company.What the deal coversThe agreement formally launches the AfCFTA #CustomsModernisation Project (ACMP), which will roll out digital portals, real-time cargo tracking, & automated inspection technology to customs administrations across Africa. The goal is to cut border bottlenecks, close revenue leakages, & make moving goods across borders, faster & cheaper. The initiative which supports AfCFTA’s ambition of building a single continental market of 1.3 billion people with a combined $3.4 trillion GDP have been signed by 50 member states. Under the concession, Bergmans will provide the financing and technical expertise, extending the same results it achieved in Nigeria to other African customs administrations.
