Accountability key to development — Northern Regional Minister

The Northern Regional Minister, Mr Ali Adolf John Mburidiba, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in governance to accelerate development across Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

He said accountability remained the surest foundation for good governance and sustainable development within local assemblies.

Mr Mburidiba made the remarks last Friday at the “Accounting to the People” series organised by the Savelugu Municipal Assembly.

He commended the assembly for embracing the initiative, which he said provided an opportunity for authorities to account to residents and other stakeholders.

The minister explained that transparency, prudent financial management and active citizen participation were essential for effective local governance.

He urged the assembly to continue showcasing its work to the people it served, stressing that transparency was key to public trust and proper resource management.

Mr Mburidiba added that as public officials, they were there to serve the people and must, therefore, account to them for their stewardship within the local governance system.

He emphasised that the “Accounting to the People” series would be rolled out across assemblies to engage assembly members, stakeholders and citizens, while highlighting development initiatives.

The minister also expressed appreciation to traditional authorities for their continuous support in maintaining peace and creating an enabling environment for development in the region.

For his part, the Paramount Chief of the Savelugu Traditional Area, Yoo Naa Abdulai Yakubu Andani, commended the government for introducing the initiative.

He described it as an important platform for strengthening transparency, promoting citizen participation and deepening public confidence in the local governance system.

The chief assured the minister of the traditional council’s continued support for government programmes aimed at improving the living conditions of the people in the Northern Region.

The Municipal Chief Executive of the Savelugu Municipal Assembly, Mr Alhassan Fuseini, mentioned that the initiative was in line with Chapter 20 of the 1992 Constitution, which promotes decentralisation and accountability in local governance.

He gave an assurance that the assembly would continue to ensure that public resources entrusted to it were used efficiently to improve the lives of residents.

Mr Fuseini added that the municipality had enjoyed relative peace through the collaborative efforts of security agencies, traditional authorities, religious leaders and residents.

He said the assembly would continue to ensure that development projects reached communities across the municipality.
