When people think of Japan, Tokyo usually steals the spotlight. But after taking the famous bullet train from Tokyo to Osaka, I quickly realized Osaka deserves just as much attention. From incredible food and immersive cultural experiences to luxury hotels and unforgettable nightlife, Osaka is a city that should absolutely be on your Japan itinerary.

One thing I love about traveling internationally is experiencing a destination beyond the typical tourist attractions. Give me amazing food, authentic local experiences, and a little adventure, and I’m happy. Osaka delivered on all of it.

Taking the Bullet Train from Tokyo to Osaka

One of my favorite parts of the trip was riding Japan’s famous Shinkansen, also known as the bullet train, from Tokyo to Osaka.

If you’ve never experienced it before, it’s an attraction in itself. The train is incredibly clean, efficient, comfortable, and surprisingly relaxing. Instead of taking another flight, the ride gave me the opportunity to watch Japan’s beautiful landscapes change from city skylines to countryside views before arriving in Osaka.

It’s one of those experiences that reminds you why Japan’s transportation system is considered one of the best in the world.

If you’re looking for luxury, convenience, and an unbeatable location, the InterContinental Osaka checks every box.

From the moment I walked in, this five star hotel gave exactly what it was supposed to give. The service was exceptional, the rooms were spacious and beautifully designed, and the breathtaking views of Osaka’s skyline. One of the biggest perks was the location. The hotel is connected to a shopping mall, less than 10 minutes from Osaka Station, close to the subway, and conveniently located near the direct airport train, making it incredibly easy to explore the city or head to the airport without unnecessary stress.

Whether you’re visiting for a few days or planning a longer Japan vacation, the location alone makes this hotel worth considering.

Experience Osaka Through a Japanese Cooking Class

One thing you’ll quickly learn about me is that I absolutely love taking cooking classes whenever I travel internationally.

It’s one of my favorite ways to experience another culture because you’re learning directly from locals while creating dishes you’ll remember long after your trip ends.

I joined a cooking class with MagicalTrip, and it ended up being one of the highlights of my entire visit to Osaka.

The instructors walked us through preparing traditional Japanese dishes while sharing stories about Japanese food culture and cooking techniques. Everything was hands on, interactive, and beginner friendly.

The biggest surprise?

The homemade miso soup.

I’ve had miso soup plenty of times before, but nothing compares to making it from scratch. It completely changed how I look at one of Japan’s most iconic comfort foods, and now homemade miso soup has officially become one of my favorite Japanese dishes.

If you’re looking for an experience that’s both fun and educational, I highly recommend adding a cooking class to your itinerary.

Enjoy Premium Japanese BBQ at Daibokujou

If you’re looking for an incredible yakiniku experience, make time for Daibokujou.

Located in Osaka’s lively Dotonbori district, the restaurant sits right in the middle of one of the city’s busiest entertainment areas.

The neighborhood itself is part of the experience. Between the neon lights, street performers, music, shopping, and endless restaurants, there’s always something happening.

Inside the restaurant, you’ll grill your own premium meats at your table, making the meal interactive from beginning to end.

The beef was incredibly flavorful, tender, and perfectly marbled. Every bite reminded me why Japan is known worldwide for its exceptional quality beef.

The seafood was equally impressive, making it a great option whether you’re a meat lover or want to enjoy a combination of both.

After dinner, simply walk outside and spend the evening exploring Dotonbori’s vibrant streets, taking photos with the famous Glico sign, and enjoying one of Osaka’s most energetic neighborhoods.

Drive Through Osaka in a Real-Life Mario Kart

If you’re looking for something completely different, this is the experience you cannot skip.

Driving through the streets of Osaka in a go-kart with JapanKart was one of the most memorable activities from the trip.

There’s nothing quite like seeing the city from behind the wheel while dressed up and cruising through Osaka’s famous streets alongside other travelers.

JapanKart also offers tours in Tokyo, making it easy to include this experience regardless of which city you’re visiting.

Before arriving in Japan, make sure you stop by your local AAA office in the United States to obtain an International Driving Permit. It only costs about $30, takes just a few minutes to process, and is required to participate in the tour.

It’s a small step that unlocks one of the most unique travel experiences you’ll have in Japan.

Don’t Skip the Local Grocery Stores

One thing I always tell travelers is to visit a local grocery store whenever you travel abroad.

It might sound simple, but it’s one of the easiest ways to experience everyday life in another country.

From Japanese snacks and fresh produce to unique beverages, desserts, instant ramen, and ingredients you’ve probably never seen before, walking through a Japanese supermarket is an experience all by itself.

I always leave with a bag full of snacks and food souvenirs to bring back home.
