Why Buddu is excited about the new Daudi Chwa II stadium

It is projected that by 2028, the Ssekabaka Daudi Chwa II stadium will be up and running in the City of Masaka courtesy of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP).

Sir Daudi Chwa is a former Kabaka of Buganda. In fact, he is the grandfather of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi, which makes it unsurprising that it is after him that this latest project was chosen to be named.

Yet, considering how Uganda has for many years continued to struggle with sports infrastructure, EACOP’s decision to partner with the Buganda Kingdom to construct a 10,000 seater stadium at the County (Ssaza) headquarters of Buddu is undoubtedly a big deal.

The project to construct the Kabaka Daudi Chwa II EACOP stadium was officially launched at the end of July 2026 amidst great excitement. The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga noted that Buganda cherished this great collaboration with EACOP because it was going to address the critical needs of Uganda such as youth empowerment.

Considering that the greater population of Uganda comprises of people below the age of 20, a number of youth are involved in sport. Therefore, this new stadium, according to Mayiga, will provide growth opportunities for many people.

But at the same time, this stadium in its true nature is a legacy of resilience, considering that it is a long term investment. The construction of this stadium, which is expected to last two years, is already ongoing, following the groundbreaking ceremony on July 23 in Buddu.

Inside sources revealed that it is expected to cost billions of shillings. Because it is in honour of Kabaka Daudi Chwa II, who signed off the land, where the current Nakivubo stadium is, back in the 1920s, this new stadium is expected to have not only a football field, but also netball, basketball and volleyball courts.

Although this stadium is only expected to be ready after the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, it is projected to be a state-of-the-art facility, covering 10 acres, which were provided by the Buganda Kingdom to fulfill a shared vision with EACOP.

This vision is aimed to foster sustainable regional development in Masaka and the surrounding areas. There is hope that upon its completion, it will drive community transformation.

According to John Bosco Habumugisha, the deputy managing director of EACOP, this stadium initiative will deliver lasting value to the people within which their company operates.

It should be noted that the erection of this stadium facility will be a timely boost for the Buddu county football team, who have in the past played their games at Masaka Recreation Ground, which is a government property, or in Kitovu, a village within the district.

The stadium will also be known as the Buddu Ssaza stadium, and is being constructed by Ocean Tech General Holdings Limited, a Ugandan Engineering firm.

Meanwhile, EACOP is a 1,443km crude oil export infrastructure that will transport Uganda’s crude oil from Kabaale – Hoima in Uganda to the Chongoleani peninsula near Tanga in Tanzania for export to the international market.

However, this pipeline, that covers 296km within Uganda, goes through 10 districts of which seven are in Buganda. Some of these districts include Kyotera, Lwengo, Rakai, Kyankwanzi, Gomba and Sembabule.
