David Musoke gave Tornado Bees the perfect start to their Men’s UG20 campaign, smashing an unbeaten 68 before watching his bowlers finish off Nile CC for a 40-run victory at the Cricket Oval, Lugogo, on Saturday.
Musoke’s 42-ball stay, laced with six fours and three sixes, was the backbone of Bees’ 209 for two after they elected to bat first.
Even without key players Cosmas Kyewuta and Anas Baig, Tornado Bees showed their depth, with Musoke and Munir Ismail taking charge after Roger Galiwango Mukasa’s explosive 55 had lifted the score to 99 for two.
Ismail struck an unbeaten 50 off 36 balls as the pair added the finishing touches to a commanding total.
Musoke said the target was always to make the most of a good batting surface.
“Our target was getting not less than 200, given that this was a good wicket, not the strongest team, and this is exactly what we did,” he said.
The innings were not only built around Musoke’s individual display. Suleman Sharif cracked 21 off 12 balls before Mukasa tore into the Nile attack with nine fours and two sixes in his 55 off 32.
Musoke then settled in, picking his shots as Ismail attacked from the other end.
“We knew that if we had some of the opening batsmen still on the wicket, we would easily get there,” he said.
Nile responded through Jimson Wankona, whose 56 off 27 balls, including nine fours and two sixes, briefly threatened to turn the chase into a contest.
But the Bees had too much control. Cyrus Kibukamusoke claimed three wickets for 31 runs while Hamid Munigwa took two for 20 and Ismail one for 11.
Wankona, Isa Kilama and Joshua Luyuyo all fell as Nile slipped to 95 for three. Then the rain came; the downpour ended the chase after 16.1 overs, with Nile on 126 for six against a revised DLS target of 167.
Joel Okoth was unbeaten on 17, but Nile were already 40 runs short; yet for Musoke, the victory was less about one good performance and more about setting the tone for the campaign.
“We knew that if we got two or three early wickets, we would easily clean them up as we did,” he said.
The Player of the Match now wants the Bees to carry that ruthlessness into their next outing.
“If we bat first, have a big score in. If we bowl first, have them out probably 100 odd and then come and chase quite easily,” Musoke said.
“But this has been a good game for us, given it’s the first game of the season, and hopefully we can build on it to have more wins and hopefully get as close as we can to the trophy.”
