Upper Volta overpower Greater Mukono

The green felt at Upper Volta Bar in Kasubi bore witness to an electrifying clash of wills on Sunday, 20th September 2026, as the National Pool League 2026 roared into Matchday two under the stewardship of the Pool Association of Uganda. Among the fiercest battles of the evening was the encounter between hosts Upper Volta and a resilient Greater Mukono side.

Playing in only their second season in the national tournament, Greater Mukono arrived with something to prove, and they immediately stunned the home crowd by storming to a bright two-frame lead.

The early momentum was electric yet chaotic. Kenneth Odong of Upper Volta attempted a bold play to slog the ball and hide the cue ball, but miscalculated, scratching by potting the white ball directly. Seizing the opening, Greater Mukono capitalised on the resulting free shots to instantly finish the frame, putting the visitors up 2-0.

However, Upper Volta’s championship pedigree soon awoke from that sluggish start. In the third frame, Najib Matovu faced Yudah Ssembusi, affectionately known as Demba Ba. Without Matovu potting a single ball, Ssembusi orchestrated a magnificent clearance to pull one back at 2-1. Mansoor Bwanika then levelled the match at 2-2 in the fourth frame, opening with a powerful break and following up with a sharp cut slice into the right pocket.

The pendulum swung continuously. Ceaser Chandiga, carrying his reputation as the sharp shooter, overcame William Yiga to edge Upper Volta ahead at 3-2. Yet Greater Mukono’s talisman and league top scorer, Julius Ssemanda, quickly answered back. 

When Joseph Rwotokonya unleashed a powerful break only to unluckily pot the cue ball, Ssemanda pounced on the two-shot advantage, clearing the table to lock the score at 3-3 and handing Rwotokonya his second loss of the day.

Despite valiant efforts from Greater Mukono stars like Musa Mulopa and Allan Kayiwa, who executed a sublime break and finish in the 14th frame, Upper Volta’s depth proved overwhelming. The hosts tightened their grip after the break, extending their lead before sealing a hard-earned 14-6 victory.

Even with that defeat, Greater Mukono had earlier stamped their authority on the match day by defeating Tororo Tigers 12-8 and Capital Night 14-6. Spearheaded by Ssemanda, who dominated by winning 10 of his 12 frames in Kasubi and surging to the top of the individual scoring standings with 37 points, Greater Mukono proved they remain fully capable of shaking up the upper echelons of the table.

Across the city, Match Day 2 delivered drama at every turn. At Pacify Hotel in Wakaliga, teams traded heavy blows, highlighted by Adi’s crushing Wakiso City 15-5 and Sinkers fighting to a 10-10 stalemate with Kireka.

Over at Amigos in Kansanga, Roxberry put on a masterclass, crushing E-Play 18-2 and Nakawa 18-2, fueled by standout individual scorers like Ian Kazibwe with 33 points, alongside Simon Lubuulwa, Joseph Kasozi, and Ibra Ssejjemba, who each hold 30 points. Meanwhile, Scrap Buyers dominated at Adi’s Spot in Kireka, sweeping Corporate Shooters 15-5, Pot It 16-4, and Mbale 13-7 to claim the early league lead.

At the close of the latest round, Scrap Buyers command the summit with 18 points from 6 matches, closely trailed by Roxberry with 17 points and Upper Volta sitting comfortably in third with 16 points. 

Greater Mukono holds strong in fourth place with 14 points, while clubs like Club 408 are showing remarkable improvement, moving up to sixth with 12 points behind stellar displays from Alfred Gumikiriza and Patrick Ssekilime.

As the National Pool League campaign gathers unprecedented momentum, all 16 teams prepare to divide into four groups for another gruelling triple-match showdown this coming weekend, where the much-anticipated Women’s National Pool League is also officially set to cue off with seven pioneering teams ready for action.
