DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) has completed technical inspection of a 1,500-tonne Modular Floating Dock at the Dar es Salaam Port, paving the way for its deployment to expand ship repair services and reduce reliance on overseas facilities.

According to information released by the authority in Dar es Salaam, the dock, capable of lifting vessels weighing up to 1,500 tonnes, has been inspected by Bureau Veritas (BV) under Regulation NR 475 and certified to be in good condition and compliant with technical requirements for its intended operations.

Additionally, TPA noted that the facility is procured at a contract cost of 5.92 million US dollars, as part of efforts to strengthen the Port of Dar es Salaam’s capacity to provide ship maintenance services locally and retain foreign exchange that would otherwise be spent on repairs abroad.

“The investment is also expected to create employment and strengthen skills in marine engineering and ship maintenance, while enabling customers to access faster and quality maritime services,” TPA stated.

The floating dock is further expected to enhance Tanzania’s position in regional maritime trade by increasing the country’s capacity to repair vessels and provide marine services across East Africa.

TPA said completion of the project forms part of its ongoing efforts to modernise port infrastructure, improve service efficiency and reduce vessel turnaround time.

The investment is ultimately expected to boost the competitiveness of the Port of Dar es Salaam and strengthen Tanzania’s position as a maritime and trade hub serving the East and Central African region.
