Young and unemployed people in Stinkwater and surrounding areas have been urged to register on the Namibia Integrated Employment Information System (NIEIS) as authorities seek to connect unemployed jobseekers with employment and skills development opportunities.
The initiative could also pave the way for greater skills development in the Windhoek Rural constituency, with councillor Willem Gariseb saying his office hopes to establish a vocational training centre in Groot Aub early next year.
“We are waiting for the City of Windhoek and other relevant stakeholders involved to come together and finalise everything. We are looking at opening a vocational training centre in Groot Aub, which will help upskill the people living in the rural areas of Windhoek,” Gariseb said.
The registration programme, which is being conducted by the Ministry of Justice and Labour Relations, is aimed at registering and updating jobseekers’ profiles on the NIEIS while also familiarising them with how to use the NIEIS portal.
According to Gariseb, there is no specific number of people that his office has set as a target for the registration initiative.
“Our target is Vision 2030, and by then the government’s mandate is that Namibia should be an industrialised country. We want to create jobs and teach people skills so they earn a living,” he said.
He said the focus is on young people who either do not have skills or have acquired skills but remain unemployed.
Gariseb encouraged more young people from Stinkwater and surrounding areas to take advantage of the registration exercise, saying having their details on the system could assist them when employment opportunities become available.
He said the system would provide a platform through which jobseekers could be identified when opportunities arise. The registration and updating of jobseekers’ profiles is scheduled for 22 and 23 September at the church next to Elder Kotze’s house in Stinkwater, starting at 09h00.
Residents have been advised to bring their curriculum vitae and certified copies of supporting documents for registration.
Gariseb said the planned vocational training centre would complement the registration initiative by giving people in the rural areas an opportunity to acquire practical skills that could improve their chances of earning a livelihood.
“Opening an establishment like a vocational centre will assist in skills transfer in those areas. A lot of unemployed or unskilled youth would take up courses of their choice to upskill themselves and the community,” he added.
The establishment of the centre is, however, dependent on discussions between the Windhoek Rural Constituency, the City of Windhoek and other relevant stakeholders being concluded.
