Oasis’ Liam Gallagher Predicts Score of Mexico-England World Cup Game: Here’s How Maná’s Fher Olvera Responded

The historic match between the national teams of Mexico and England in the 2026 FIFA World Cup round of 16 on Sunday (July 5) has lit up social media, and the music world hasn’t been immune to the excitement. Ahead of the much-anticipated clash at Estadio Ciudad de México, Liam Gallagher, singer of the British band Oasis, predicted on Wednesday (July 1) a crushing victory for his countrymen against the Mexican team — a projection to which Maná’s frontman, Fher Olvera, responded decisively in a video.

“The Oasis singer said Mexico was going to lose to England 5-0. Come on, no way. Get real, dude!” Olvera, wrapped in a Mexican flag, said in the clip posted on his Instagram account Wednesday. “5-0? Calm down! We’ll see on Sunday how it goes, dude,” the Mexican rocker added, sparking a wave of comments and memes in support of Maná and the Mexican National Team, which broke an almost half-century drought in the knockout stage on Tuesday by defeating Ecuador 2-0.

Earlier, Gallagher had predicted England’s sweeping victory in response to a user on X who asked his thoughts on his country’s defeat at the 1986 World Cup against Argentina at Estadio Azteca (renamed Estadio Ciudad de México during this tournament).

“I think we’ll beat Mexico 5-0,” Gallagher wrote, igniting controversy on social media. He later clarified he was “obv kidding” and updated his prediction to a 3-0 victory due to the “heat and altitude” of the game’s location. A fan also wondered “what if we acc get 5-0,” to which the rocker responded cheekily on X, “Well I’ll obv take all the credit.”

Content creators and even Mexican celebrities — such as former RBD member Alfonso Herrera — responded with memes to the British musician, whose band is incredibly popular and beloved in Mexico. Oasis kicked off the Latin American leg of its reunion tour in Mexico City last September, performing two sold-out shows at Estadio GNP Seguros.

Gallagher and his brother Noel, both founders of Oasis, are known for their obsession with soccer and are proud Manchester City fans. Meanwhile, Maná was part of the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup 2026 at Estadio Ciudad de México on June 11, alongside Shakira with Burna Boy, J Balvin, Lila Downs, Danny Ocean, Los Ángeles Azules and Tyla.

In addition, Olvera also held a major free concert at the Glorieta de la Minerva monument on June 17 in his hometown of Guadalajara, drawing an estimated 170,000 people, according to the Government of Jalisco. The event was part of the World Cup Fan Fest activities organized in Guadalajara, one of the tournament’s host cities.

The opening whistle this Sunday will bring the social media debate stirred by Gallagher and Olvera to an end, transferring all tension directly to the field. Mexico hasn’t faced England in a World Cup since 1966, when they tied 1-1.
