Maya Leaders recognize Strength and Leadership of Indigenous Women

By Zoila Palma: Maya leaders in southern Belize are joining Indigenous communities around the world in celebrating the strength, wisdom, resilience and leadership of Indigenous women on International Day of Indigenous Women, observed on September 5, 2026.

The leaders highlighted the invaluable contributions of Maya women as mothers, caregivers, farmers, educators, knowledge holders, community leaders and stewards of the land.

They emphasized that Maya women play a vital role in preserving the traditions, languages, stories, values and ancestral knowledge that continue to shape Maya identity and communities.

The Maya Leader of Southern Belize also recognized the generations of Maya women whose dedication has strengthened their communities and those who continue to nurture and guide younger generations. Their contributions, leaders said, extend beyond the home and into education, agriculture, cultural preservation, community development and leadership.

Maya leaders called on communities to celebrate and honour Maya women not only on this special day, but throughout the year, recognizing them as a source of strength, wisdom and hope for the future.
