Malawi’s Lilongwe Gains Expanded 4G LTE Coverage Through Digital Inclusion Partnership

Converged Technology Networks (CTN)  has expanded its 4G LTE fixed wireless coverage to more neighbourhoods in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe, through a partnership with unconnected.org and the Internet Society.

According to Brian Munyao Longwe, a technologist and digital strategist involved in the initiative, the partnership is also expected to provide more than 20 secondary schools with high-performance internet access free of charge on a permanent basis.

The expansion is aimed at improving broadband access in Lilongwe, particularly in areas that have traditionally faced limited connectivity. CTN provides 4G/LTE broadband and fixed wireless services in the city and has been expanding connectivity to homes, schools and other users.

The initiative builds on collaboration between the technology partners to extend internet infrastructure and support digital inclusion in Malawi. The Internet Society’s network data also lists Converged Technology Networks as a member of the Lilongwe Open Neutral Internet Exchange (LIONEX), highlighting its role in the city’s connectivity ecosystem.

The planned school connectivity will give more than 20 secondary schools access to high-performance internet without recurring access charges, potentially supporting digital learning, online educational resources and broader access to internet-based services.

The development represents another step in efforts to expand affordable and reliable broadband connectivity in Malawi, while using partnerships between private-sector technology providers and digital inclusion organisations to reach underserved communities.
