Lita Hunter Krohn honored with Outstanding Cultural Leadership Award

By Zoila Palma:  The National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) has recognized prominent Belizean historian, author, artist and cultural advocate Lita Hunter Krohn with its Outstanding Cultural Leadership Award for her decades of dedication to preserving and promoting Belize’s history and cultural heritage.

Krohn is regarded as a pioneer in Belize’s cultural landscape and played a key role in the establishment of NICH. She served as the country’s first Director of Culture, helping lay the foundation for an institution that continues to safeguard and promote Belize’s rich cultural heritage.

Her leadership and contribution to Belize’s cultural institutions also extended to the Museum of Belize and Houses of Culture. In 2003, she was appointed Director, further advancing efforts to preserve, document and make Belize’s history accessible to the public.

Beyond her leadership roles, Krohn has contributed significantly to cultural and academic publications.

Her editorial expertise supported publications including Brukdown Magazine and Belizean Studies at St. John’s College, helping to document and promote Belizean history, culture and identity.

Krohn continues to share her knowledge and passion for Belizean heritage through education and public speaking. Most recently, she led the national “In Defense of History” tour, engaging students and members of the public in discussions about Belize’s shared past and the importance of protecting the country’s historical legacy.
