Licensed rider, unlicensed bike: Guinea Grass teen charged

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): An 18-year-old Guinea Grass Village rider had his paperwork half right, and the missing half has earned him two traffic charges and a date at the Orange Walk Magistrate Court.

According to the Belize Police Department, on Friday, July 31, 2026, at about 10:45 p.m., an officer patrolling within Guinea Grass Village observed a person approaching who stopped upon seeing the police.

The officer approached and requested a driver’s licence, which the rider produced, and it was valid. The good news ended there. Asked for the insurance, the rider stated the motorcycle was not insured, and further checks revealed the motorcycle was not licensed either.

The rider was informed of the offences, driving a motor vehicle not insured with third-party risk insurance and driving an unlicensed motor vehicle, cautioned, and escorted to the Guinea Grass Sub Station.

There, he was identified as David Eliazar Efrain Perez, 18, of Guinea Grass Village. He was informed of his constitutional rights and voluntarily signed the custody record.

That same date, police formally arrested and charged Perez with both traffic offences. Cautioned once more, he chose to remain silent.

Bail was granted in the sum of $500, and he is to appear at the Orange Walk Magistrate Court at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 5, 2026.

The case is the third of its kind in under two weeks, following near-identical charges against riders in Belmopan and Orange Walk Town, as traffic enforcement keeps finding motorcycles on the road with paperwork running behind the wheels. The uninsured bike remains the quiet risk in every near-miss: when something goes wrong, there is no third-party cover for whoever gets hurt.
