Jason’s adventure shows that even the biggest journeys begin with a single push.
Most people use a skateboard to get around a neighbourhood, practise tricks with friends or spend an afternoon at a skatepark.
Jason had a slightly bigger idea.
He wanted to skateboard across Africa.
It all began when Jason met two young skateboarders in Uganda. They loved skating, but they didn’t have a proper skatepark. Instead, they practised on rough roads and broken surfaces, making the best of what they had.
Their passion inspired Jason.
He decided to take on an incredible adventure, skateboarding thousands of kilometres across Africa to help raise support for a skatepark where children could safely learn, play and chase their dreams.
The journey was far from easy. There were hot days, sore muscles and long stretches of road that seemed to go on forever. But every morning, Jason climbed back onto his skateboard and kept moving forward.
As he travelled through towns, villages and cities, something unexpected happened.
People started cheering for him.
Children waved handmade signs. Families stood beside roads to encourage him. Farmers, runners, cyclists and fellow skateboarders joined him for parts of the journey. Strangers offered meals, places to stay and words of support.
Everywhere Jason went, kindness seemed to follow.
By the time he reached South Africa, thousands of people were following his adventure. What had started as one man’s dream had become a story shared by an entire continent.
After 106 days and more than 5,500 kilometres, Jason finally rolled into Cape Town.
The crowds cheered as he crossed the finish line, celebrating the end of an incredible journey and also the reason behind it.
Jason had set out to help children he didn’t know.
Along the way, he reminded everyone that kindness can travel a very long way too.
His skateboard carried him across Africa, but it was the support, generosity and encouragement of countless people that helped him reach the finish.
And perhaps that’s the most wonderful part of the story.
Sometimes the biggest adventures aren’t about where we go.
They’re about the people we inspire and the hope we leave behind.
