By Zoila Palma: Lionel Messi made an emotional return to the pitch for Inter Miami on Wednesday night, just days after the death of his father, Jorge Messi.
His appearance against Club León in the Leagues Cup came as a surprise to many fans, who erupted in cheers when the Argentine star emerged from the sidelines during the second half.
Messi, 39, had taken time away from the club following his father’s death at age 68 after an illness.
The football star had returned home to be with his family and later expressed uncertainty about continuing his career without his father, who played a major role throughout his journey in professional football.
When Messi began warming up before entering the match, the crowd responded with a huge ovation.
One commentator captured the moment, saying, “You can already hear it, everybody’s just blown away to see the greatest of all time again today.”
As Messi jogged onto the field, fans continued to cheer and show their support for the Inter Miami captain.
