By Zoila Palma: Defending FIFA World Cup champions Argentina will take on Cape Verde in the Round of 32 tonight at Hard Rock Stadium, with Lionel Messi leading the South American giants into a matchup many view as a classic David versus Goliath encounter.
Argentina advanced after winning all three of its group-stage matches, while Cape Verde reached the knockout stage without a victory, earning three draws to keep its World Cup dream alive.
Despite the odds, Cape Verde remains confident ahead of the historic clash.
Backup defender Ianique dos Santos Tavares, known as Stopira, said the team believes it can achieve something special. Head coach Bubista described the match as “the most important” in the nation’s history, stressing that his side earned its place in the knockout stage on merit and wants to showcase the quality of Cape Verdean football on the world stage.
Argentina midfielder Rodrigo De Paul admitted the team initially expected to face either Spain or Uruguay after the tournament draw, but Cape Verde emerged as the surprise qualifier from the group.
Cape Verde plans to rely on a disciplined defensive approach, aggressive set pieces and as much possession as possible after conceding just two goals during the group stage, including a scoreless draw against Spain.
