By Zoila Palma: U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has estimated that the war with Iran has cost the United States $37.5 billion so far, as Republicans prepare a $95 billion funding package to support the military and other priorities of the Trump administration.
Hegseth made the disclosure Tuesday during a heated Senate Appropriations Committee hearing, where protesters repeatedly interrupted his opening remarks, American Press reports.
The hearing came days after the Pentagon announced that three additional U.S. service members had died in the conflict, bringing the American death toll to 17, while more than 100 others have been injured since early July.
Hegseth described the proposed funding as an “urgent, necessary” injection of money, warning that the military could face critical shortfalls without it.
Democrats, however, sharply criticized the administration’s handling of the conflict.
The funding request comes amid growing public concern over the conflict, rising gas prices linked to disruptions in oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and concerns over U.S. munitions supplies.
