International News: Europe endures scorching summer as heat waves push temperatures above 40°C

By Zoila Palma:  Western Europe is experiencing an unusually hot summer, with a series of intense heat waves pushing temperatures above 40°C (104°F) across several countries.

The extreme heat began as early as May, when a heat dome shattered temperature records, and by mid-August, the region had experienced its fifth major heat wave of the season, NASA reports.

The prolonged heat has disrupted daily life across the region, contributing to increased hospitalizations and heat-related deaths while damaging roads and railway infrastructure.

Wildfires have also intensified in areas not typically accustomed to such severe conditions, while months of drought have lowered river levels and created challenges for agriculture, transportation, water supplies and energy production.

Temperature records have been broken repeatedly. London reached 35.1°C on May 26, surpassing the previous May record by 2.3°C, while Bordeaux, France, recorded 42.5°C on June 24 after breaking its maximum-temperature record for three consecutive days. According to Europe’s Copernicus climate monitoring service, combined temperatures across Western Europe in June and July were the highest on record.

The heat has been particularly dangerous because many European homes lack air conditioning, while some cities have limited green spaces and have experienced unusually high nighttime temperatures. Preliminary reports indicate that heat may have been associated with around 10,000 excess deaths across countries including the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Belgium. Experts warn that older adults and people with underlying health conditions are especially vulnerable to prolonged heat.

Scientists say Europe must prepare for increasingly frequent and severe heat events by expanding green spaces, planting trees, using reflective roofing materials and improving buildings and cooling systems.
