By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police are investigating an armed confrontation in which a gunman allegedly opened fire on members of the Gang Intelligence, Investigation and Interdiction Unit, commonly known as GI3.
The incident occurred on July 23, 2026, while GI3 officers were conducting mobile operations in the Saint Martin’s and Port Loyola areas of Belize City.
Police say officers attempted to intercept a vehicle of interest, but its driver refused to stop, prompting a pursuit. The fleeing vehicle eventually crashed into a lamp post, after which three people exited and ran.
Investigators allege that the front-seat passenger fired at the officers, who returned fire. All three occupants managed to escape, but no police officers were injured.
The vehicle was subsequently impounded, and police say significant progress has been made in the investigation. Separate reporting placed the incident in the Police Street area behind the Foam Factory and indicated that it occurred during the early-morning hours.
