From Michelle Obama To Cardi B, Keke & Brandy & Monica, This Is Your Guide To Celebs At Essence Fest

(Photo by Bennett Raglin/Getty Images for ESSENCE) You can’t just call it a music festival. Or just an empowering conference of Black women in their respective fields dropping gem after gem. Or just say it’s the biggest celebration of Black culture all summer in New Orleans (or anywhere in the country, all year). Because if you’ve ever spent Fourth of July weekend in New Orleans for the ESSENCE Festival of Culture, you know it’s so much more than all of the above. It’s a family reunion — even with a bunch of people you’ve never met before.  Michelle Obama sitting down with Keke Palmer felt like eavesdropping on a little sister/ big sister conversation you weren’t supposed to be listening in on. The Aaliyah tribute was a fitting epic celebration while also feeling like an intimate tribute to the icon we lost too soon. The Black women passing by in the Convention Center combing through rows of Black vendors doling out compliments to each other didn’t feel like strangers. In other words, the vibes were immaculate. And that extended into every moment of the festival — including the headline-grabbing celebrity appearances.  Whether your faves were spitting knowledge during daytime panels or delivering career-spanning performances at night, each appearance added something memorable to the weekend. Between the panels, beauty activations, wellness experiences, and packed evening performances, there was always somewhere to be—and somehow, you still managed to run into an old friend, make a new one in line, or leave with a recommendation that made the weekend even better. That’s the magic of ESSENCE Fest: every moment feels like it’s happening in community. Whether your trip to NOLA finally made it out the group chat, or you befriended some aunties beside you while scream-singing to Patti Labelle, or you were just getting your whole life following along from the comfort of your couch, here’s your guide to some of the biggest celebrities — and the moments —- who made the 2026 ESSENCE Festival of Culture unforgettable. Michelle Obama Brought Inspiration To The Main Stage One of the weekend’s most anticipated appearances came from former First Lady Michelle Obama, who headlined a live conversation moderated by actress and multi-hyphenate Keke “Keep A Job” Palmer. Rather than a traditional keynote, the session leaned into authenticity, covering leadership, purpose, personal growth, aging, fashion, and the importance of building community. Both Obama and Palmer felt at ease with the crowd — kiking like they were on a couch in one of their houses, not the Caesars Superdome — and it was a fitting reminder that Essence Fest has always been about more than entertainment, creating space for meaningful dialogue alongside the music. Michelle Obama Brought Inspiration To The Main Stage

One of the weekend’s most anticipated appearances came from former First Lady Michelle Obama, who headlined a live conversation moderated by actress and multi-hyphenate Keke “Keep A Job” Palmer. Rather than a traditional keynote, the session leaned into authenticity, covering leadership, purpose, personal growth, aging, fashion, and the importance of building community. The Creator & Podcast Festival Was Full Of Star Power

The Superdome may have hosted the night’s biggest performances, but the Convention Center was where the conversations were flowing. Sanaa Lathan joined Keke Palmer’s podcast for a candid conversation on storytelling and longevity in Hollywood, while Danielle Brooks brought her signature humor and honesty to a taping of her new podcast, The Inner Mission.

From intimate interviews to live audience Q&As, the Creator & Podcast Festival offered fans something they don’t always get on a concert stage: the chance to hear celebrities unplugged, unfiltered, and in conversation, making it one of the weekend’s hidden gems.

Cardi B Delivered A Dazzling Headlining Performance

Friday night belonged to Cardi B. Making her ESSENCE Festival headlining debut, the Grammy-winning rapper brought the energy fans have come to expect, performing hit after hit with elaborate production and that signature Cardi B personality. Her performance quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of opening night, proving that she remains one of hip-hop’s most electrifying live performers.

Kehlani Set The Mood With Effortless R&B

Also taking the stage Friday, Kehlani balanced the evening’s high-octane performances with smooth vocals and emotional lyrical storytelling. Their set showcased fan favorites while reminding audiences why they’ve become one of modern R&B’s most compelling voices.

Brandy & Monica Made The Stage Their Own

Saturday night’s biggest nostalgic moment belonged to Brandy and Monica. Decades after “The Boy Is Mine” became a defining R&B anthem, the pair reunited for a celebration of their legendary catalogues. Their appearance felt like more than a performance—it was a celebration of longevity, sisterhood, and the enduring influence of ’90s R&B. Fans sang every lyric, creating one of the weekend’s loudest sing-alongs.

Babyface Turned The Superdome Into An R&B Masterclass

With a catalogue that has shaped generations of music, Babyface delivered a performance filled with beloved hits and unforgettable songwriting moments. Whether fans knew him as the voice behind the microphone or the pen behind countless classics, his set became a celebration of one of R&B’s most influential architects.

Keke Palmer Was Everywhere—And We Loved Every Minute Of It

If there was one celebrity who seemed to embody the spirit of ESSENCE Festival all weekend long, you know it’s your girl Keke Palmer! The actress, entrepreneur, and media personality kicked things off by moderating the candid conversation with Michelle Obama mentioned above.

Palmer also connected with festivalgoers through additional daytime conversations centered on career growth, creativity, and showing up authentically, bringing the same charisma and relatability that have made her one of entertainment’s most beloved personalities. And because no ESSENCE weekend is complete without a wellness moment, she even led an energizing Practice by Palmer pilates class in the Unbothered & Well space, encouraging attendees to prioritize movement and self-care while making fitness feel accessible and fun.

Missy Elliott Curated An Aaliyah Tribute

One of the weekend’s most emotional moments came during the “One in a Million, Forever” tribute honoring Aaliyah, curated by Missy Elliott. The performance celebrated the 30th anniversary of One in a Million while honoring the late icon’s immeasurable impact on music, fashion, and culture.

Featuring performances by Mya, an R&B legend in her own right, and current R&B stars who feel like direct descendants of Aaliyah: Ryan Destiny, Chloe Bailey, Normai, and Sevyn Streeter. Through heartfelt performances, iconic choreography and nostalgic visuals, the tribute had the packed Superdome in tears (OK, maybe that was just me), and served as a reminder that Aaliyah’s influence continues to shape generations of artists. Her legacy remains one in a million and seeing all of the women she inspired onstage together reminds us that it’s never been more important to pour into young Black female talent while they’re still with us.

Hip-Hop Pioneers Closed Out The Weekend

Sunday also celebrated hip-hop history with performances from Public Enemy, Doug E. Fresh & Friends, and George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic. Joined by special guests including MC Lyte, Tevin Campbell (!!!), Two Short, Big Freedia, Big Boi, Scarface, Trombone Shorty, Durand Bernarr, Nona Hendryx, Kim Burrell, and Savion Glover, the finale underscored ESSENCE’s ability to bring multiple generations of Black music together on one stage.
