By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Burrell Boom resident who spent nearly a month on remand for possession of 0.13 grams of cocaine walked free from the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday after changing his plea from not guilty to guilty.
Eyon Ramirez, 20, appeared in Court #5 around midday, where he pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled drug. In sentencing him, the Magistrate took into account the three weeks and six days Ramirez had already spent at the Belize Central Prison and sentenced him to time served.
Ramirez, who had been unable to post bail following his arraignment, expressed relief at being released and said he was happy to be going home. He is expected to celebrate his 21st birthday on Sunday, August 23.
Ramirez was first arraigned on July 24, 2026, following his arrest a day earlier.
According to police, officers conducting motorcycle patrol on Euphrates Avenue near Allenby Street observed Ramirez acting suspiciously and allegedly attempting to evade them. Police said that as officers approached to conduct a search, Ramirez removed a white substance from his pocket and dropped it to the ground before attempting to flee.
Officers reportedly detained Ramirez and recovered the substance, which was later weighed at 0.13 grams and identified as cocaine.
Ramirez was subsequently charged with possession of a controlled drug and remanded to the Belize Central Prison, where he remained until Wednesday’s court appearance.
