BEL and government call press conference on energy issues

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize Electricity Limited and the Government of Belize have called a press conference for Monday morning to address what they describe as topical issues within the energy landscape.

The briefing is set for Monday, August 24 at 10am at Toucan Hall, Belize Biltmore Plaza, 3 Miles Philip Goldson Highway, Belize City.

The announcement follows days of public complaints over sharp increases in electricity bills, with some consumers reporting their bills tripled.

Prime Minister John Briceño said on Friday that he had asked Minister Michel Chebat to meet with BEL Executive Chairman Young and the Public Utilities Commission, and to meet with the media early this week.

The complaints centre on the Cost of Power Adjustment, or COPA, approved by the PUC at 1.5 cents per kilowatt hour for August.

The United Democratic Party has demanded that the increase be rolled back and that government explain how close to $400 million invested in the energy sector has benefited consumers.

The press conference is expected to address those questions directly.
