Big Zulu Mourns Maskandi Star Scebi Dlamini. Big Zulu has joined a growing chorus of mourners following the sudden death of Maskandi star Scebi Dlamini, whose life was cut short in a tragic car accident.
Still processing the loss, the award-winning rapper took to Instagram with a brief but deeply emotional tribute to his fellow musician. “Aw kodwa mfwethu

The message, which expresses his inability to find the words to describe the loss, reflected the shock felt across South Africa’s music community following Dlamini’s death.
The celebrated Maskandi artist, who hailed from Msinga in KwaZulu-Natal, died in the early hours of Sunday, 9 August 2026, following a collision at traffic lights opposite Melomed Hospital in Richards Bay.
Emergency personnel and law enforcement officers rushed to the scene, but Dlamini suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His crew member, Gamu Mchunu, also died in the accident, while two other people travelling in the vehicle were injured and taken to hospital.
KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma confirmed the tragedy and praised Dlamini for the mark he made on South African music. He described the musician as an invaluable national asset whose work had earned him a special place among millions of Maskandi fans.
Scebi Dlamini was also celebrated for his humility and for helping put uMsinga on the cultural map through his music.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sports, Arts and Culture has also expressed its condolences, noting the scale of his contribution to Maskandi. Over the course of his career, Dlamini released more than 20 albums and established himself as one of the genre’s recognisable voices.
For his family, the loss has been especially devastating. His uncle, Mthethelele Dlamini, spoke about the future the musician was still building, including a new home and plans with his wife.
Dlamini is expected to be laid to rest on Saturday at his home in uMsinga.
For Big Zulu, the loss is also personal. The two artists shared a musical history, collaborating on the 2019 song “Ubuhle Bakho”, featured on Big Zulu’s album Ungqongqoshe Wongqongqoshe. Dlamini contributed both vocals and lyrics to the track.
Tributes have continued to pour in from across the Maskandi fraternity, with artists such as Khuzani Mpungose, political organisations, cultural groups and fans taking time to honour the late musician.
Dlamini’s contribution went beyond a catalogue of albums. Through his storytelling, guitar-led sound and connection to Zulu culture, he became part of the generation carrying Maskandi forward while keeping its traditions alive.
Now, an artist who spent years giving audiences songs to sing along to has left behind a silence no performance can fill.
Big Zulu may have struggled to find the words, but his final message said enough: “Ulale kahle.”
