Bench warrant cancelled for Lorenzo Tzul after he explains missed court because he was in jail

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A bench warrant issued for Lorenzo Tzul after he repeatedly failed to appear in court has been cancelled after he explained that he had been serving time in prison during part of the period he missed his court dates.

Tzul appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he was asked to explain his absence from proceedings in a pending case.

Tzul told the court that he had been incarcerated for possession of a controlled drug and claimed that while at the Belize Central Prison, he informed prison authorities that he had a court matter scheduled, but was not taken to court.

The Senior Magistrate questioned why his $1,500 bail should not be revoked. Tzul told the court that he was released from prison around his birthday on July 4 and was now trying to do better.

Because of his previous failure to appear, the court also sought to have his surety notified. While bail money can be forfeited when an accused person breaches bail conditions, the court did not take that action against Tzul’s sister, who had stood surety for him.

The Magistrate ultimately cancelled the bench warrant and allowed Tzul to remain on bail.

Tzul was then provided with 11 pages of disclosure, and his case was adjourned to October 20, 2026, when the matter is scheduled for trial.
