Belize leads Central American Commission for Environment and Development as first Technical Meeting on Seas and Biodiversity gets underway

By Zoila Palma:  Belize, through the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Climate Change, is currently holding the first technical meeting of the Central American Commission for Environment and Development (CCAD) Technical Committee on Seas and Biodiversity, as the country serves as Pro Tempore President of the regional body.

The two-day meeting, which began on July 28 and is being held in a hybrid format, brings together technical specialists from environment ministries across the SICA region.

Discussions are focused on following up on ministerial agreements and advancing the committee’s work plan, with key topics including the state of biodiversity in the region and progress toward the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Participants are also reviewing the progress of the Subregional Biodiversity Center (CBD-CCAD), as well as the status of private reserves and wetlands throughout the SICA region. The meeting provides an opportunity for regional experts to exchange information and strengthen cooperation on the conservation and sustainable management of biodiversity and marine ecosystems.

The specialists are also receiving updates on several regional initiatives, including the Basin to Sea-CAM project, an integrated ecosystem conservation model supported by JICA, and biodiversity initiatives under the Great Forests of Mesoamerica and Linking Central American programmes.
